Obese children

Journal Blog post
I heard a story about Social Services taken away a child from his mother because he was obese. It is kind of shocking how bad the problem seems to be. There are children that are 10 years old and weigh 200 pounds. Even though I wonder how you can let that happen to your child it happens more than we think.
But you have to look at the causes. When they showed a news report about the boy, his mother was just as obese as him. I do not think they should take the child away from the parent. How is it going to help to take the child which will be traumatized and probably will turn to food for comfort. I think they should intervene and help the mother and the child. Obviously the mother does not know how to live a healthy lifestyle. How can we take a child from the mother when she is not intentionally doing this to the child.
People need to be educated and eating healthy needs to be made more available.
I know from experience that trying to cook healthy costs a lot of money, next to eating unhealthy. Fruits and vegetables are very expensive and there is a link between socioeconomic status and obesity. Our whole society is sedentary and active people are rare.
Obesity is damaging to kids. They should be active and healthy because as they get older they will just continue that behavior. A lot of children are sitting at home alone with no social interactions eating and playing computer games or watching TV.
I think it is sad when I see a child that is obese. I know that other children tease them and further push them into isolation. I hope society will change to a more active lifestyle because our children are the victims to the conveniences of the Western lifestyle.
